Hagerstown, IN

Hagerstown is a Wayne County town on flat agricultural land between Richmond and Indianapolis. It was laid out in 1832, when businesses and mills were already forming around Nettle Creek; a post office followed in 1833, and the Hagerstown Canal Company organized in 1846. The canal did not define the town for long, but the growth it represents helped produce a durable civic line: an early school, the Hagerstown Academy, a circulating library, telephone service in 1899, electricity in 1908, and municipal water in 1909. Hagerstown’s industrial history also runs through the Teetor family: in 1895 Charles Teetor turned a bicycle-repair shop into a company that made self-propelled railroad inspection cars, a local story later associated with the Perfect Circle name.

Today the town’s civic life is concentrated around Main Street and the institutions that grew from that earlier investment. The Hagerstown Museum and Arts Place occupies a historic building and combines local-history preservation with fine-arts classes. The Jefferson Township Public Library, gifted to the town by the Teetor family in 1929, remains a central community institution, while Nettle Creek School Corporation reflects the school consolidations that brought several townships together in the 1960s. Hagerstown is a small eastern Indiana place where canals, schoolhouses, manufacturing memory, and a Main Street arts-and-history space still fit into one town-sized story.
