Halaula, HI

Halaula is a small CDP in North Kohala on the northern side of Hawaii Island. Hawaii Route 270 runs through the community, linking it west toward Kapaau and south toward the island's main highway, while the road also continues east toward an overlook above Pololu Valley. The setting is a mix of old Kohala settlement, pasture, tropical vegetation, and broad ocean-facing views, with the Pacific included in the CDP's boundary. The route makes Halaula a natural stopping point for North Kohala drives.

Much of Halaula's historic weight sits within the Bond District, a National Register historic district centered on the Bond House and the surviving mission complex associated with Reverend Elias Bond. The house began in 1840 and was expanded as several generations lived there, giving the area a tangible link to nineteenth-century missionary life. Today Halaula remains tied to North Kohala's small network of communities, local schools, Route 270 errands, water infrastructure, and the cultural landscape shared with Kapaau, Hawi, and Pololu.
