Halibut Cove, AK

Halibut Cove is a tiny, quiet community on the south side of Kachemak Bay, about ten miles across the water from Homer. Home to just a few dozen year-round residents, it has no cars, roads, or traffic lights. Daily life revolves entirely around boats, boardwalks, and the tides. Houses sit on pilings along the rocky shoreline and across Ismailof Island, with skiffs tying up at private docks and at the local floating post office.

Originally founded as a commercial fishing village, the cove is now home to a mix of working fishermen, oyster growers, artists, and seasonal residents. Moving here means embracing a truly maritime lifestyle where grocery runs require a boat trip into Homer and neighbors visit by water. It feels like an intimate island neighborhood where peaceful coastal scenery and everyday self-reliance go hand in hand.
