Halifax, NC

Halifax is a quiet, historic county seat tucked along the Roanoke River in northeastern North Carolina. Founded in the mid-1700s as a thriving river port, the town originally grew around cargo boats hauling crops and timber along the waterways. While regional shipping eventually shifted toward rail lines and larger cities, Halifax settled into a much gentler pace of life defined by tree-lined streets, open countryside, and its scenic spot along the riverbank.

The town holds a proud place in early American history as the birthplace of the Halifax Resolves. On April 12, 1776, North Carolina delegates met here to pass the first official call for independence from Britain, a milestone still commemorated on the state flag. Every spring, the community marks the anniversary with Halifax Day, bringing neighbors and visitors together for historical walking tours, colonial reenactments, and local gatherings.

Today, Halifax has the feel of a quiet open-air museum with a population of fewer than 200 residents. The Historic Halifax State Historic Site weaves directly into the neighborhood, featuring preserved 18th-century landmarks like the Eagle Tavern, the old county jail, and a designated Underground Railroad walking trail.
