Hallandale Beach, FL

Hallandale Beach puts Gulfstream Park and public Atlantic shoreline inside just 4.21 square miles of land. Railroad owner Henry Flagler recruited Luther Halland to establish the settlement; Halland opened a trading post and became its first postmaster. Tomato farming drove the early local economy. The community incorporated in 1927, Gulfstream Park opened in 1939, and the official municipal name changed from Hallandale to Hallandale Beach in 1999. The 2020–2024 profile describes a notably international population: 52.1 percent were foreign-born, and 64.2 percent of people age five or older spoke a language other than English at home. Adults age 65 or older made up 23.4 percent. Gulfstream Park remained a working racecourse in 2026, when its summer calendar scheduled live racing from Saturday through Monday. On the ocean side, South City Beach Park combines beach access with showers, a pavilion, bocce courts, a playground, volleyball, a concession, beach wheelchairs, and protected beach hours; city residents can register for discounted beachfront parking.

It is one of 18 municipal park facilities, a system that also includes the City Marina, Golden Isles Tennis Center, and Historic Village at the Curci House. Four free, all-electric Cloud shuttle routes link neighborhoods with city facilities, shopping areas, and Broward County Transit. As of July 2026, three routes ran Monday through Saturday and one ran daily. B.F. James Park and Pool adds a deeper civic connection: when the pool opened in 2014, the city described it as fulfillment of a promise that local leaders had made to the Black community decades earlier.
