Hallock, MN

Hallock is the Kittson County seat in northwestern Minnesota, about 20 miles from Canada. The city was platted in 1879 and named for Charles Hallock, a writer and naturalist who promoted the region's game and grain country. The 2020 census counted 906 residents. U.S. Highway 75 and Minnesota State Highway 175 bring the surrounding farm roads into town, and Hallock Municipal Airport sits about a mile south.

Hallock's county-seat role is easy to see in its mix of government offices, regional stops, and recreation. The Kittson County History Museum is at nearby Lake Bronson, while Hallock itself has a library, hospital, parks, a pool, a curling rink, and county fairgrounds. The city also had Minnesota's first indoor ice rink, built in 1894. Summer brings the Kittson County Fair and Rib Fest, and the local parks connect the city to the Two Rivers landscape. Hallock is a small border-region city where county business, farm-country travel, and northern recreation meet on the same grid.
