Hamlet, IN

Hamlet is a Starke County town laid out in 1863 by John Hamlet, who gave the community its name. A post office opened in 1864, and the town incorporated in 1896. The 2020 census counted 773 residents. Hamlet occupies parts of Davis and Oregon Townships, in the flat northwest Indiana country where roads, rail history, and small settlements have long overlapped.

U.S. 30 once ran through both sides of town; its 1926 realignment changed the road pattern and left Hamlet with a visible connection to an older route. The town still has a public library branch of the Starke County Public Library System, one of the everyday places that gives a small community a shared center near the town's center. Hamlet also has an unusual museum connection: a meteorite known as Hamlet is preserved in collections at the Smithsonian and Chicago's Field Museum. That detail reaches far beyond the town's size, while the library and the old highway keep its local story grounded.
