About Hamlin
Hamlin was laid out in 1870 and named for Hannibal Hamlin, Abraham Lincoln's vice president. Its service geography was tied to the St. Joseph & Western Railway, with the town located about seven miles west of Hiawatha. The Kansas Historical Society records a Hamlin post office from 1857 through 1973. Brown County's present administrative map places Hamlin Township among the county's rural jurisdictions, while Hiawatha remains the county seat and nearest larger center. The rail alignment, long postal history, and continuing relationship with Hiawatha are the clearest ways to place Hamlin in Brown County.
