Water surrounds Hampton Bays on almost every side, shaping daily life here in the best possible way. A powerful 1938 hurricane carved out the Shinnecock Inlet, opening the bay to the Atlantic Ocean and giving the community miles of beautiful ocean beaches. On the eastern edge of town, the historic Shinnecock Canal connects Shinnecock Bay with Great Peconic Bay through a working lock system, allowing boaters to cruise between the north and south waters without making the long trip around Montauk Point. Hampton Bays maintains an authentic, year-round maritime culture that sets it apart on the East End. The inlet hosts one of the busiest commercial fishing ports in New York, where you can watch trawlers unload their daily catch along Dune Road or stop in for fresh seafood at waterfront restaurants. Crossing south over the Ponquogue Bridge puts you right in the middle of this working waterfront. Over by the canal, a scenic maritime park offers walking paths and grassy areas where neighbors gather to watch passing yachts and fishing boats navigate the locks.

In town, Montauk Highway serves as Main Street, lined with local diners, pizza spots, bakeries, and everyday services. The area was originally known as Good Ground, a name that lives on at Good Ground Park. This 36-acre wooded park has quickly become the local gathering spot, featuring walking trails, a playground, and an outdoor amphitheater tucked into a natural hillside for summer concerts and outdoor movie nights.
