About Hampton

Hampton is the Franklin County seat in north-central Iowa, with 4,337 residents in the 2020 census. The city sits two miles southeast of Beeds Lake State Park, so the local map runs from a county-seat downtown toward a 99-acre reservoir with fishing, boating, a two-mile shoreline trail, and the park’s distinctive limestone dam. That gives Hampton a useful split personality: courthouse and county services in town, lake and camp roads just beyond it. The park keeps that outdoor option close at hand.

The Franklin County Fair takes over the convention center for five days each July, bringing the agricultural cycle into the city. Wind power is another visible regional connection: the 200 MW Buffalo Creek Wind Farm was developed near Hampton in 2007. Hampton-Dumont Community School District provides the school network, while the city’s small businesses and county offices keep daily errands centered locally. Hampton is a service town with a state park close enough to be part of the ordinary weekend map.
