Hampton, NE

Hampton occupies a small piece of Hamilton County where railroad history and farming still meet. Joshua Cox founded the village in 1879 and petitioned for the railroad to pass through it, helping turn a settlement on the prairie into a trading point. The Burlington and Missouri River line reached Hampton that year, and German, Danish, and Swedish families north of town, along with a Russian community to the south and east, used it as a local headquarters for supplies and business.

The Cox family also left a mark on Hampton’s livestock history. In 1891, Joshua and his brother James shipped cattle from the United States to Liverpool, a story the village still remembers. Today, Hampton Public School and local civic organizations give the village its daily structure, while the surrounding fields keep its agricultural setting in view. Hampton’s scale is small, but its history reaches across migration, rail freight, and the cattle trade—three forces that helped shape many Nebraska towns and remain unusually clear here.
