Hancock, WI

Hancock is a village in Waushara County, Wisconsin, inside the larger Town of Hancock and alongside a chain of lakes that includes Pine and Fish Lakes. The village began as a tavern on the pinery road between Portage and Stevens Point in 1850, incorporated in 1902, and had 393 residents in the 2020 census. A glacial moraine forms the local divide: lakes and rolling ground lie to the east, while flatter sandy country extends west toward Adams County.

The railroad changed Hancock's scale in 1875, when the Wisconsin Central line connected Portage and Stevens Point and made shipping easier for local merchants and residents. The line was removed in 1946 and Highway 51 was later rerouted, yet Main Street still carries the village's older pattern through the Hancock Public Library and the remaining civic buildings. The local scoop is a lake-and-road village whose identity was built first around a tavern, then a railroad, and now the landscape and small civic network left after both transportation systems moved on.
