Hankinson, ND

Located in southeastern North Dakota about an hour south of Fargo and a half-hour from Wahpeton, Hankinson is a quiet farming town of around 900 residents. Wide-open fields of corn, sunflowers, and soybeans surround the community, giving it a peaceful, open feel. Daily life here largely revolves around the local K-12 school, where families regularly turn out for ballgames, concerts, and community events. It is a close-knit place where neighbors know one another and kids can safely ride their bikes around the neighborhood.

Outdoor recreation is a big plus for the area, with Lake Elsie sitting just minutes southwest of town. The lake provides an easy go-to spot for boating, fishing, camping, and lakeside cabin living during the warmer months. The town also carries a fun bit of history from an 1880s railroad rivalry, which inspired its founder to name streets after artillery terms like Cannon and Grape avenues. Today, Hankinson blends that classic prairie character with a steady agricultural backbone and an unhurried, affordable lifestyle.
