Hanna, IN

Hanna is a LaPorte County census-designated place in southern Indiana, laid out in 1858 and set in the western part of Hanna Township. U.S. Route 30 passes along the north side of the community, leading west toward Valparaiso and east toward Plymouth. The town was named for an Indiana judge with the surname Hanna. Its map is a mix of roadside businesses, homes, farm ground, and the township roads that connect the small center to the wider county.

Hanna's library began in 1935, when members of the local Culture Club organized a collection of about 200 books in the old post office building. Volunteers ran that early library, and a new branch facility was completed in 2016 as part of a larger county library renovation. South Central Community School Corporation serves the area. Hanna is the kind of place whose history is carried by practical institutions: a road crossing the township, a post office that once held the book collection, and a school and library still keeping the community connected to the surrounding farms.
