Hanna, WY

Hanna is a Carbon County town where the 2020 census counted 683 residents. The Union Pacific started the settlement as a coal-supply location in 1889, and the old town grew over the workings of the Hanna No. 4 mine. Six Union Pacific mines opened in the basin before underground production ended in 1954. The town’s coal history also includes the deadly mine disasters of 1903 and 1908, which together took more than 200 lives and remain central to local memory.

Today, Hanna’s streets carry that industrial history alongside ranch country, highway travel, and the wide spaces of south-central Wyoming. The former company town sits near the Union Pacific corridor and U.S. 30, with the Hanna Basin Museum and the surviving dragline helping residents and visitors place the mining story on the ground. Carbon County School District No. 2 serves local students through Hanna Elementary and H.E.M. Junior/Senior High School. The annual “Coal Is King” celebration keeps the mining past in the calendar, while the town’s schools, cemetery, and civic buildings carry it into ordinary life.
