Hanson, KY

Hanson is a Hopkins County home rule-class city built around a railroad town plan. It began in 1869 on a fifty-acre tract given to the Henderson and Nashville Railroad by Judge Robert Eastwood and Rev. Roland Gooch, and engineer Henry B. Hanson laid out the streets and lent the city his name. Passenger and freight service made Hanson a shipping point for area farmers, while tobacco factories, sawmills, a hotel, bank, and Main Street stores filled out its early commercial life.

The Hanson Historic District preserves a compact stretch of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century buildings along Main Street and Railroad Street. U.S. 41 runs through town, and I-69 now carries regional traffic past the eastern edge, with Madisonville south and Henderson north. City hall, small shops, restaurants, and local services occupy a place still legible as a railroad center. Hanson is a western Kentucky city where the old depot logic survives in its street grid, historic storefronts, and connection to the surrounding farm country.
