Happy Camp, CA

Happy Camp is a census-designated place in Siskiyou County on the Klamath River, about 70 miles west of Interstate 5 and 100 miles northeast of Willow Creek. The 2020 census counted 905 residents. State Route 96 follows the river through a forested mountain corridor, with Elk Creek, Indian Creek, and other tributaries meeting the Klamath around town. The road is the main thread through a wide backcountry, linking Happy Camp with the Klamath National Forest and the Oregon border country.

Happy Camp sits in the heart of the Karuk people's ancestral landscape, and the Karuk Tribe is headquartered here today. Gold prospectors arrived along the river in the early 1850s, giving the settlement its English name, while the forest and river continued to shape work and travel. The U.S. Forest Service maintains a local office, and trailheads into surrounding wilderness begin within a short drive. Happy Camp is a river community where tribal government, forest roads, fishing waters, and the long memory of the Klamath all occupy the same valley.
