Happy Valley is an unincorporated census-designated place on the west coast of Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula, 22 miles northwest of Homer along the Sterling Highway and close to Cook Inlet. The highway is the community’s practical spine, carrying residents north toward Soldotna and south to Homer; Homer supplies the nearby airport, harbor, and Alaska Marine Highway landing. Work follows a road-based pattern, with residents commuting to southern Kenai Peninsula communities, Alaska’s oil regions, and seasonal construction jobs. Hunting and fishing remain important local activities and part of household subsistence, and the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District serves the area. With no local airport or ferry terminal, Happy Valley’s daily geography is made up of dispersed homes, working land, and highway connections to nearby communities.
