About Happy Valley

Happy Valley is an Eddy County census-designated place on Carlsbad’s western edge, about two miles from the city. New Mexico State Road 524 passes through the community, which began as a farming settlement in the Pecos Valley. The 2020 census counted 617 residents. Its setting is a useful local clue: open land and homes meet the Carlsbad area’s potash, oil, and gas economy, so a small rural address sits next to one of southeastern New Mexico’s major working centers.

Carlsbad Municipal Schools serves Happy Valley, and the city handles the schools, shopping, medical care, and public offices residents use beyond the community’s own roads. Eddy County’s potash story began in 1925 when drilling for oil led to the discovery of potash east of Carlsbad, helping create the mineral economy that still shapes the region. NM 524 is the everyday connection between the two landscapes. Happy Valley’s local character comes from that edge: a small farm-and-residential community with Carlsbad’s industrial and civic network just down the road.
