Hardinsburg, KY

Hardinsburg is the Breckinridge County seat, a home-rule city in Kentucky's Pennyrile region. The 2020 Census counted 2,385 residents. Main Street and the courthouse keep the town's government role visible, while the surrounding county runs toward the Ohio River and the rolling limestone country of western Kentucky. The city's name points back to Captain William Hardin, who established a frontier fort at the site in 1780.

Hardinsburg's courthouse lawn holds a less tidy piece of the story: on December 28, 1864, guerrillas set the courthouse on fire, but residents saved the building and its records. The town's community life still gathers around county offices, the library, schools, and the courthouse square. The square still gives the town its daily orientation. Hardinsburg feels like a working seat of government first, with its frontier beginnings and river-country geography close behind. Even the old fire story says something about the place: civic memory here is practical, physical, and tied to the records people refused to lose.
