Hardwick, GA

Hardwick is a Baldwin County census-designated place just south of Milledgeville, built around the long history of Central State Hospital. The 2020 census counted 3,513 residents; a 2024 ACS estimate lists 3,402. The place was once known as Midway-Hardwick, and the hospital campus has been the biggest landmark in its story. Hardwick is tied to Milledgeville by roads, work, and a shared central-Georgia setting without a separate downtown.

Central State Hospital gives Hardwick an unusually large institutional footprint for a named place without a municipal government. The community also carries an older academic footnote: Oglethorpe University operated here in the nineteenth century before moving to Atlanta. Hardwick’s map is mostly residential and institutional, with Milledgeville close by and the Baldwin County landscape opening around it. It is a place where the big landmarks are older than the current boundary lines, and where the name survives because the community grew around them. The result is a community shaped by institutions and proximity.
