Harlem, FL

Harlem is a census-designated place in northeastern Hendry County, just north of Clewiston and within the sugar-growing country around Lake Okeechobee. The community took shape in the 1920s after a Black settlement on the lake was relocated to land near the sugar fields. Its story is tied to labor, migration, hurricanes, and the effort of Black residents to build a town with churches, homes, businesses, and schools.

Harlem Academy served as an important school for the community during the era of segregated education, and the neighborhood's history remains visible through reunions, local preservation work, and the annual Harlem Cultural and Heritage Festival. Sugarcane still dominates the regional landscape, with Clewiston providing nearby stores, jobs, and county services. Roads run between the lake, the fields, and the town's residential streets. The lake and the cane fields frame many local conversations. Harlem is a Florida community whose history belongs in both the story of Lake Okeechobee agriculture and the longer record of Black town-building in the South.
