About Harper
Harper is a city in Harper County, founded in 1877 by a colony from Iowa on the southern Kansas prairie. The 2020 census counted 1,313 residents. The city and county share the name of Sergeant Marion Harper of the 2nd Kansas Cavalry, who died during the Civil War. Chaparral USD 361 serves Harper and the surrounding farm country, with the district formed through the unification of the Anthony and Harper schools.
Harper grew in the period when Iowa settlers, rail lines, and new county seats were turning open prairie into towns. Its name keeps a military memory in the middle of that agricultural landscape, while its school district reflects the practical regional ties that small Kansas communities have built over time. Main streets, farm roads, school buses, and county services organize daily life here. Harper is a compact city with a broad horizon, a shared county name, and a school system that links it to nearby Anthony and the rest of south-central Kansas.
