Harpers Ferry, WV

Harpers Ferry is a Jefferson County town at the point where the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers meet, with West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia all close enough to shape the view. It is West Virginia’s easternmost and lowest town, though the better local bearing is the water: the rivers squeeze the lower town into a narrow transportation and industrial corridor.

The armory and arsenal made the place nationally important long before John Brown’s 1859 raid fixed it in the country’s story. Construction on the federal armory began in 1799, and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad’s Potomac bridge arrived in 1836–37. The Civil War then pulled Harpers Ferry through repeated changes of control. Today the lower town, John Brown’s Fort, the former Storer College campus, the national historical park, and the Appalachian Trail all sit inside that older river-and-rail geography.
