Harristown, IL

Harristown is a Macon County village with Decatur just over its eastern edge and the Sangamon River story running through the landscape. The name honors Major Thomas L. Harris, but the strongest local landmark is Lincoln Trail Homestead State Park, about four miles south. Abraham Lincoln’s family settled near the Sangamon there; the park preserves the site of the first Illinois home associated with the family and the Whitley mill dam. So even a place this close to Decatur has a clear frontier-era hook of its own.

The village itself took shape when the Wabash railroad reached the area in 1856. A store followed in 1859, churches and a school came early, and the town’s practical side grew with an elevator, tile works, and an Illinois Traction System line. Harristown sits inside Sangamon Valley Community Unit School District 9, but the useful mental map is still simple: Decatur to the east, old rail routes through town, and Lincoln-era ground across the south.
