Hartshorne, OK

Hartshorne is a Pittsburg County city fifteen miles east of McAlester on U.S. Highway 270, a community shaped by coal mining. Mines opened in the mid-nineteenth century, operators recruited immigrants from Italy, Ireland, Poland, Lithuania, and other countries, and the Choctaw Coal and Railway line gave the town an early transportation link. A post office opened in 1850, and Hartshorne incorporated in 1900. The old mining history still shapes the city's position between McAlester and southeastern Oklahoma.

Hartshorne Public Schools now runs three campuses: elementary, middle, and high school. The district's current facilities include a football field, an event center and basketball complex, and softball and baseball grounds, so school athletics are part of the town's calendar. City Hall organizes utilities, sanitation, police and fire, the library, senior center, parks, recreation, and community-center programs.
