Harvard, NE

Harvard is a Clay County city of 951 residents in the 2020 census, part of the Hastings micropolitan area. The railroad reached the settlement in 1871 and gave the city its name, borrowed from Harvard University in Massachusetts. Clay County's early population grew around new rail lines, farmsteads, and immigrant communities, and Harvard became one of the places where those routes met the county's broad agricultural plain.

A much larger chapter arrived during World War II. Harvard Army Air Field, two miles northeast of town, covered more than 1,700 acres and trained bomber crews in B-17s, B-24s, and B-29s. Several thousand military personnel and civilian workers strained local housing and services, then left a landscape that was later used for state aviation and farming. Today Harvard's streets, school, and businesses sit within a smaller Clay County setting, but the airfield history still gives the city an outsized connection to the national story. Harvard is a Nebraska railroad town with a wartime airfield just beyond its edge.
