Hastings-on-Hudson, NY

Hastings-on-Hudson packs an incredible amount of character into two hilly square miles along the Hudson River in lower Westchester. With around 8,500 residents, it has the feel of a tight-knit village paired with dramatic river views that peek out between rooftops and tree-lined streets. Housing runs from historic Victorians and Craftsman houses to mid-century ranches, co-ops, and newer apartments near the center of town. Getting into Manhattan is straightforward, with Metro-North trains reaching Grand Central in about 35 minutes. Keep in mind that elevation shapes daily life here. A home located just three blocks from the station might look like a quick stroll on a map, but you will definitely feel the climb on your way back up.

The village has deep historical roots, evolving from Lenape territory and colonial farmland into a busy nineteenth-century industrial port. Local quarries once supplied paving stone and marble for Manhattan landmarks, and shoreline factories operated here through much of the twentieth century. Following the closure of those industrial plants in the 1970s, Hastings transformed into a creative, eco-conscious community. Revitalizing the old waterfront into open parkland has been a long-term village priority, and the riverfront parks now offer sweeping, unobstructed views of the towering Palisades cliffs across the water.

Daily life centers around Warburton Avenue and Main Street, where you can grab morning espresso, browse independent shops, pick up fresh sourdough, or meet neighbors for dinner at a local bistro. Green space is easy to find. The Old Croton Aqueduct trail runs directly through town for casual walking and jogging, while the 100-acre Hillside Woods offers quiet forest trails close to home. Warm weekends bring neighbors together at Chemka Pool, the local farmers market, and riverfront concert series. The village is compact and residential, so you will head to neighboring towns for major grocery runs and large retail stores.
