Hawthorne, NJ

Goffle Brook runs through the shallow valley at the center of Hawthorne and into the Passaic River, while the First Watchung Ridge rises along the borough's western edge. Much of this 3.6-square-mile community was built long ago: more than half of its residential structures predate 1947, and the 2020 population of 19,637 was close to its level six decades earlier. NJ Transit's Hawthorne station places the borough on the Main-Bergen County commuter-rail line and provides bike racks, Wi-Fi, and parking. The brook also forms Hawthorne's largest public landscape. Passaic County's 103-acre Goffle Brook Park was designed by the Olmsted Brothers firm and includes walking and bicycle paths, athletic fields and courts, fishing, a dog run, playgrounds, fitness equipment, and picnic areas. The John W. Rea House within the park now serves as the Passaic County Arts Center.

In June 2026, the county's free Art in the Park festival used the grounds for music, art demonstrations, hands-on activities, vendors, and guided walks. Borough facilities add Wagaraw and Franklin fields, tennis courts, a municipal pool, Veterans' Field and River Walk, and Eight-Acre Woods. Lenni-Lenape people lived and hunted along Goffle Brook and the Passaic before Dutch farming families settled the area in the 1700s. Hawthorne separated from Manchester Township and incorporated in 1898; a house-building program beginning around 1908 accelerated its change into a residential suburb. A later institution carries Hawthorne's name beyond the borough. Recent veterans organized the Hawthorne Caballeros Drum and Bugle Corps on March 20, 1946. The all-age corps marked its 80th year in 2026.
