Hay Springs, NE

Hay Springs sits in northwestern Nebraska along Highway 20, right where the rugged bluffs and pine-covered hills of the Pine Ridge meet wide-open prairie and ranch land. Founded in the 1880s as a railroad stop, the town took its name from the spring-fed meadows that first drew settlers to the area. Today, it offers a quiet, scenic backdrop for everyday living, with dramatic white buttes rising to the north and miles of open farmland rolling out to the south and east.

Day-to-day life here revolves around agriculture, a close-knit community, and the local K-12 school district. The town covers the essentials with local co-ops, hardware and lumber suppliers, a pharmacy, and senior care, while keeping a relaxed, small-town pace. When you want to spend time outside, Walgren Lake State Recreation Area is just a few miles down the road for fishing, camping, and boating. It is also famous for local folklore about the Walgren Lake monster, a friendly legend the community still celebrates every summer during its annual festival.
