About Healdsburg

Healdsburg's central plaza was part of the town plan from the beginning rather than a later civic embellishment. Western Wappo and Southern Pomo-speaking people lived along the Russian River for thousands of years before the land became part of Rancho Sotoyome in 1841. Harmon Heald built a cabin beside the northbound trail in 1851, followed by a general store and post office. In 1857 he had a surveyor lay out the plaza, streets, and 85 lots; the city incorporated in 1867, and the railroad arrived in 1871. The Healdsburg Museum, housed in the 1910-11 Carnegie library, preserves records and objects from those chapters in a building that reopened as the museum in 1990. The Plaza still concentrates recurring events. The city's 2026 Tuesdays in the Plaza series scheduled weekly summer concerts with food vendors and children's activities, while a Sunday series added local performances.

The certified farmers market, founded in 1978, operated on Saturdays from April through December and Tuesdays from May through September in 2026, both at the Foley Family Community Pavilion near the Plaza. The annual Future Farmers Country Fair and Twilight Parade keep agricultural projects and livestock in the civic calendar. Sonoma County Transit's fare-free Route 67 circulated among neighborhoods, downtown, and the Senior Center Monday through Saturday in 2026, while Route 60 connected Healdsburg with Windsor, Santa Rosa, and Cloverdale. Beyond downtown, the city protects the 155-acre Healdsburg Ridge, whose trails cross wetlands, oak woodland, serpentine chaparral, and grassland. Fitch Mountain's preserve has another trail network; recent access work added a bridge, a lower-gradient accessible route, and trailhead information.
