Heavener, OK

Tucked into southeastern Oklahoma about twelve miles south of Poteau, Heavener is a quiet small town with deep railroad roots and scenic mountain surroundings. The community began in the late 1800s as a trading post in the Choctaw Nation, expanding rapidly once the railway arrived and established the town as a regional division point. Today, it offers a laid-back, down-to-earth lifestyle where long-standing heritage and peaceful rural scenery go hand in hand.

Just outside city limits sits Heavener Runestone Park, perched atop Poteau Mountain with hiking trails, camping spots, and sweeping valley overlooks. The park draws plenty of curiosity thanks to its massive sandstone slab bearing ancient runic carvings, which the town celebrates each year with a popular Viking Festival. Between its rail history, active poultry and agricultural industries, and proximity to the Ouachita National Forest, Heavener makes for an easygoing home base surrounded by nature.
