Heavener, OK

Heavener sits in Le Flore County in the former Choctaw Nation, twelve miles south of Poteau, and its first story is a meeting of people, farms, and rail. Zachary Taylor Ward and his Choctaw wife, Tabitha Hickman Ward, moved a store to the site in 1880; the settlement took Heavener’s name after Joseph H. Heavener, who arrived in 1877. A cotton gin, gristmill, school, and church followed. The railroad arrived in 1896, bringing a boxcar post office and station; by 1910, a roundhouse made Heavener a division point.

Outside town, Heavener Runestone Park gives the place its most talked-about landmark: a 55-acre park centered on a sandstone marked with eight inscriptions, with trails, camping, and an overlook toward the city. The park hosts an annual Viking Festival, while rail and poultry remain part of the wider local story.
