Hebron, WI

Hebron is a census-designated place in the town of Hebron, Jefferson County, where the Bark River passes through an agricultural part of southern Wisconsin. The 2020 census counted 209 residents. The CDP covers about 2.5 square miles, so it is a small settlement inside a larger civil town. The river is more than a line on the map: its waterpower helped draw the first mill builders to the area.

The wider town's story reaches back to the Rock River Claim Company, which claimed land along the Bark River in 1835 and completed a sawmill in 1836–37. That mill became known as Bark River Mills before the town took the name Hebron, a choice remembered as coming from a singing-school gathering. Hebron Town Hall, built largely by local hands from fieldstone, later became a museum for the Bark River Woods Historical Society. The CDP's modern population is small, but the mill, river, and town hall keep the older community shape visible.
