Hecker, IL

Hecker is a village spread across Monroe and St. Clair counties in southwestern Illinois. Settlers were in the area by 1815, and the original community was called Freedom. In 1895 residents chose a new name honoring Friedrich Hecker, a German patriot and Civil War colonel who had stayed in the village. The Articles of Incorporation followed that year. Illinois Route 159 now runs through Main Street, linking Hecker with Red Bud, Waterloo, and Belleville.

Churches, the former schoolhouse, the village park, and the Hecker Community Center keep the old center legible. The village maintains a Village Hall, water connection through the Freeburg-Smithton-Hecker Water Commission, a fire department, and local businesses including a long-running oil and tire service company and a lumber and crop-services operation. Hecker's German and English settlement history is still visible in its church buildings and street names, while the fire company, park, and community events give the compact village its present-day gathering points for residents throughout the year.
