About Hecla

Hecla is a city in Brown County, South Dakota, United States, located only a few miles south of the North Dakota border. The 2020 census counted 193 residents. State Highway 37 runs along the east side of town. Hecla was platted in 1886. The short version is that Hecla carries an earlier story into the places people know and use now. That is the local read on Hecla: its past remains attached to the places people use now. Hecla was named after Hekla, a stratovolcano in Iceland. The Civil Township of Hecla surrounds the municipal boundary of Hecla.
