Hedgesville, WV

Hedgesville is a Berkeley County town in West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle, laid out along the old Warm Springs Road, now West Virginia Route 9. The 2020 census counted 300 residents. Route 9 still gives the town its regional direction, running southeast toward Martinsburg and Interstate 81 and northwest toward Berkeley Springs and U.S. 522. In the center, the Hedgesville Historic District covers the blocks around Main and Mary streets, while the highway connects that compact historic core to a much larger Eastern Panhandle corridor.

Before the town was incorporated, the area was home to Tuscarora people. William Snodgrass later became an early settler, and the town was established by act of the Virginia General Assembly in 1836 before incorporation in 1854. The state’s historic register also lists Snodgrass Tavern, nearby farms, and houses along the roads around Hedgesville. That gives the town two clear layers: an old center with named buildings and a modern route that carries the region through it.
