About Hedrick

Hedrick is a Keokuk County city with 728 people at the 2020 census. It was built around a rare railroad tangle: in 1882 the Burlington and Western and Iowa Central laid competing east-west lines through the area, crossing the Rock Island tracks. The town incorporated on April 23, 1883, and took the name of General Hedrick. Its brick Main Street and depot still hold onto that railroad origin, with the depot having served the Minneapolis and St. Louis and Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific railways.

School lines shifted in a much more consequential way. The former Hedrick Community School District was involuntarily dissolved by Iowa on July 1, 1991, the first Iowa district closed that way, and Hedrick students were rezoned to Pekin schools. Most businesses now open along Highway 149 rather than in the old business district. The local scoop is a small Keokuk County city where the brick main street and depot keep the rail story visible while the school map points to Pekin.
