About Helen

Helen is a White County city on the headwaters of the Chattahoochee River, where a former timber town was recast in the late 1960s as a Bavarian-style mountain center. The older settlement grew around gold, lumber, the Unicoi Turnpike, and a railroad connector to Gainesville. Artist John Kollock's German-inspired sketches gave local merchants a shared design in 1969, and chalet-style facades soon changed the downtown streetscape. Today the river runs through the center, with shops, restaurants, lodging, and visitor services gathered along North Main Street, where Georgia 17 and 75 share the route.

Helen's setting reaches well beyond the storefronts. Unicoi State Park and its lake sit nearby, the Chattahoochee National Forest wraps around the mountain roads, and Sautee-Nacoochee and the Richard Russell Highway extend the surrounding day-trip map. Tubing, fishing, and other river activity shape the warm-weather calendar, while White County schools and city services support the year-round town behind the visitor economy. Helen's local character comes from that unusual overlap: a working municipality whose downtown was deliberately redesigned to carry a German village look.
