Helena, MS

Helena is an unincorporated census-designated place in eastern Jackson County, east of Escatawpa and north of Moss Point. Interstate 10 runs about four miles south, and Pascagoula—the county seat—is roughly twelve miles southwest. The place sits in the coastal plain behind Mississippi’s river towns, close enough to use Moss Point for schools and larger services but distinct on the county map.

Helena’s surviving local record is brief: a post office operated under the name from 1910 to 1924. That short run fits a community whose identity is carried more by roads, neighbors, and the surrounding landscape than by a formal downtown. Moss Point is the practical reference point for the surrounding school and coastal road network. The larger Jackson County story is tied to the Escatawpa and Pascagoula Rivers, sawmills, timber shipping, and Moss Point’s growth as a coastal working city.
