Hemlock, MI

Hemlock is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in the south-central part of Richland Township, Saginaw County. The 2020 census counted 1,408 residents. Settlers arrived in 1865, and a post office opened in 1869 under the name Hemlock City before shortening it to Hemlock in 1895. The ZIP Code reaches beyond the CDP into most of Richland Township and parts of neighboring Fremont, Thomas, Swan Creek, and Ingersoll townships, so Hemlock's daily map is larger than the town center itself.

The name still carries a wood-and-mill memory, and the annual Sawdust Days festival makes that connection visible. The event began in the late 1970s after a local hardware store held a chainsaw promotion and demonstration, then grew into a September community tradition. Hemlock Public School District supplies the central civic institution, with schools and local activities tying the surrounding township together. Saginaw and Midland sit within the wider regional orbit, but Hemlock keeps a distinct small-community rhythm: a post-office crossroads, farm country around the edges, and a festival that turns an old lumber word into a current town gathering.
