Hempstead, TX

Hempstead is a quiet small town in Waller County, sitting roughly 50 miles northwest of Houston along Highway 290. With around 5,500 residents, it offers a relaxed, rural pace of life with plenty of open land and room to spread out. Long known as the Watermelon Capital of Texas, the community gathers every summer for its annual Watermelon Festival, bringing barbecue cook-offs, live music, and a hometown parade to Gazebo Park and the historic downtown streets.

Families are served by Hempstead ISD schools, and daily errands revolve around local diners, neighborhood churches, and small businesses near the county courthouse. For major retail centers, specialized medical care, and corporate commutes, residents easily head down the highway to Cypress, Katy, or College Station. Like much of Southeast Texas, summers are hot and humid, but the area remains an appealing option for anyone seeking affordable acreage and a friendly, country lifestyle close to the city.
