Henderson Point, MS

Henderson Point is a Harrison County census-designated place with 232 people at the 2020 census, occupying the end of a peninsula on the Gulf Coast. St. Louis Bay wraps around its west and north sides, the Gulf of Mexico borders the south, and Pass Christian begins to the east. That gives the community a three-sided water map, but its everyday connection is a highway: U.S. 90 reaches the east end of the Bay St. Louis Bridge and crosses to Bay St. Louis in Hancock County.

U.S. 90 has long made Henderson Point a passage point. The bridge opened in 1928 as part of the Old Spanish Trail highway, when the new road linked New Orleans and Mobile without a ferry; Mississippi History Now records automobiles crossing the free bridge shortly afterward. Hurricane Katrina destroyed the older 1.9-mile bridge in 2005. Mississippi's replacement project called for a new high-rise crossing and repairs to the Henderson Point connection. Today, the peninsula, the bridge, and the surrounding water define this Gulfport–Biloxi metro community more clearly than its modest population number does.
