Hennepin, IL

Hennepin is Putnam County's seat on the Illinois River, a village named for the explorer Louis Hennepin. The river, nearby rail lines, and highway routes made it a transportation point, while the courthouse gave the village a county role from the early days of Putnam County. The original county courthouse, built in the 1830s, still serves its original purpose, and Hennepin remains part of the Ottawa micropolitan area. The 2020 census counted 769 residents.

Local history has several doors. The Edward Pulsifer House is a museum and Putnam County Historical Society headquarters, and the Agricultural and Historical Museum occupies a former Star Union Brewery building one block away. The museums hold farm equipment, school memories, household objects, and a steel-mill display that fit Hennepin's river-and-industry story. The courthouse and two museums make that history easy to encounter on foot. Putnam County Community Unit School District 535 serves local students. Hennepin is a county-seat river village where the courthouse, museums, rail-and-road connections, and agriculture all occupy the same small map.
