Hennessey, OK

Hennessey is a Kingfisher County town of 2,151 residents in the 2020 census, laid along the historic Chisholm Trail in northern Oklahoma. U.S. 81 follows the old cattle-trail route, running about 18 miles south to Kingfisher and 20 miles north to Enid. The town takes its name from Pat Hennessey, an Irish freighter killed near the present townsite in 1874, so the road and the name both carry the cattle-drive era into the current map. Downtown is where the story becomes usable day to day.

Bull Foot Park marks a former water stop for drovers with a cattle-drive statue, while the Sam and Burla Snyder Memorial History Center covers the settlement of north-central Oklahoma. The town also maintains an aquatic park, public library, and parks department, and the downtown mix includes Prairie Quilt and Vernost Wine Co., which hosts local music. Hennessey is a small service town with its history still sitting directly beside the shops, pool, library, and highway.
