About Henry

Henry is a Marshall County city on the Illinois River, named for General James D. Henry and surveyed in 1834. The river is the town's working backdrop, and it gave Henry a lock-and-dam story. The first lock and dam on the Illinois River was built at Henry in 1870, and the old lock wall still sits along the riverfront. Illinois Route 18 runs through the center as Third Street and School Street before crossing the river on the Henry Bridge. Henry's local map is made from water, bridge, school, and riverfront blocks — a small Illinois city whose history is easiest to follow from the bank of the river.
