Hermann, MO

Hermann is the Gasconade County seat on the south side of the Missouri River, in the region known as the Missouri Rhineland. The 2020 census counted 2,185 residents. The German Settlement Society purchased 11,300 acres in 1836, George Bayer bought the town site in 1837, and the settlement became Deutschheim in 1840 before Hermann was incorporated in 1842. Several early houses remain in the historic district, so the German settlement story is part of the town's street pattern. Hermann's working economy now turns on the surrounding vineyards and wineries: seven wineries in the Hermann American Viticultural Area produce about one-third of Missouri's wine, and six current members form the Hermann Wine Trail.

Wharf Street holds the Amtrak station and visitor center along the river, while Fourth and Market streets climb into the commercial core. The wineries sit outside that compact center, and Katy Trail access is across the river at McKittrick. A lending library, schools, county offices, and the riverfront all fit around the same small-town grid.
