Hester, LA

Hester is a St. James Parish community on the east bank of the Mississippi River, strung along Louisiana Highway 44. The road follows the parish’s River Road pattern, with the river, levee, farms, and older settlement corridors close together. Hester’s location puts it inside the wider Mississippi River working landscape between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, where sugarcane fields, river transport, industrial sites, and parish services share the same long north-south corridor.

St. James Parish identifies sugarcane as its leading row crop and maintains parish transit along Highways 44 and 18, connecting communities such as Lutcher, Gramercy, Vacherie, and surrounding neighborhoods. That gives Hester a practical regional relationship: LA 44 is the local road, the river is the physical edge, and the parish network supplies schools, shopping, government, and transportation.
