Hettinger, ND

Hettinger is the Adams County seat, a western North Dakota city whose civic role began with the railroad. Founded in 1907 along the Milwaukee Road’s Pacific Extension, it took the name of Hettinger County when Adams County was carved out that same year. U.S. 12 and North Dakota 8 meet the town’s grid, while the surrounding country opens into dryland farms, ranches, grassland, and the buttes of the Northern Plains. The courthouse and post office give the center a visible public history: the 1928 courthouse carries Art Deco touches, and the post office remains on the National Register.

Hettinger’s most distinctive working institution is the NDSU Hettinger Research Extension Center. Its 1909 sheep-station beginnings grew into research on crops, beef, lambs, grazing, wildlife, and prairie restoration, keeping the city connected to the land beyond its streets. A Yellowstone Trail marker near the courthouse adds an older road story, and nearby buffalo and Lakota-Dakota history reaches across the grasslands. Hettinger serves as a county-government center, a research town, and a gateway into Adams County’s ranch and badlands country.
