About Hi-Nella

Hi-Nella is a Camden County borough with one of New Jersey's smaller municipal footprints and a name with two competing explanations. It was created in 1929 from Clementon Township, during the burst of small boroughs that reshaped this part of the county. The name may refer to a Native American phrase for high ground, or to Nella Parker, whose husband developed Hi-Nella Estates. Today it sits among Somerdale, Stratford, and Gloucester Township, a compact South Jersey municipality with a surprisingly involved origin story.
