About Hickman

Hickman is a small Stanislaus County community across the Tuolumne River, about a mile and a half south of Waterford. The 2020 census counted 604 residents. Its setting is agricultural: grain fields, dairies, orchards, and the roads that move wheat and cattle toward larger markets make up the surrounding working landscape. Hickman grew out of the Gold Rush era and a railroad stop, and the name came from Louis M. Hickman, who married Mary Dallas, daughter of early settler Charles Dallas.

The community's practical map runs across the river to Waterford, while Hickman keeps the farm valley as its defining setting. Three radio towers carry KLOC broadcasts from the community, an unusual piece of infrastructure for a place this small. The river, orchards, dairies, and grain fields do most of the visual work here, with the towers marking the horizon. Hickman is an unincorporated Stanislaus County place where agriculture and the nearby river crossing still tell you how the community fits together.
